Beth Orton has announced her ninth studio album.
The English singer-songwriter will release the self-produced 'The Ground Above' through Partisan Records on June 26, following up 2022's 'Weather Alive'.
Featuring contributions from a group of trusted musicians, including multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, Vernon Spring’s Sam Beste, drummers Chris Vatalaro, Vishal Nayak and Paul Butler, trumpet player Christos Styliande, bassist Tom Herbert and Austrian singer, songwriter, producer and guitarist Dave Okumu, the album is structured in two halves, the first exploring fragmented territory, while the second offers a warmer, more expansive and melodic sound.
The record will include the recently released title track and the newly shared single Waiting, which like its predecessor builds slowly across a dreamy soundscape, with subtle influences from Laura Nyro, Carole King and Orton's early collaborator Terry Callier. Describing it, Orton called it "a celebration of moving out of the holding pattern fear keeps us in."
Alongside the album news, Orton has announced North American tour dates running from September 15 to October 3, and a UK tour later in the autumn, including stops in Brighton, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol, Norwich and London, where she'll conclude the run at the Alexandra Palace Theatre on October 22. Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time on Friday (April 24).
Orton will also appear at this year's 20th edition of Latitude festival in July, headlined by David Byrne, Teddy Swims and Lewis Capaldi, following headline shows in Belfast, Dundee and Aberdeen in May. Tickets are on sale now.
