Johnny Depp and Imelda May have collaborated on a new version of the late Shane MacGowan and Sinéad O'Connor’s 1995 duet Haunted.
Originally released by The Pogues in 1986 for the soundtrack accompanying the Sid and Nancy film, then later re-recorded as a duet between MacGowan and O'Connor for the Two If By Sea/Stolen Hearts soundtrack, the new stripped back take delivers an atmospheric, folk-rock sound, with Dublin singer-songwriter May's warm vocal delivery contrasting with Depp's spoken-word style.
The song marks the second preview of the star-studded Shane MacGowan tribute album, '20th Century Paddy - The Songs of Shane MacGowan', due out November 13.
Announced last month alongside the release of its opening track, Bruce Springsteen's cover of A Rainy Night In Soho, other contributing artists include Camille O’Sullivan, Damien Dempsey, David Gray, Dropkick Murphys, Hozier and Jessie Buckley, Kate Moss, Primal Scream, The Libertines, The Pogues, and Tom Waits.
Shane MacGowan passed away in 2023 aged 65 following a diagnosis of Encephalitis. The Pogues, meanwhile, are continuing to play live and have shows lined up across Europe and the UK for The Pogues Play The Hits Tour this winter.
Depp will also tour Europe and the UK this summer as the guitarist for Hollywood Vampires, alongside Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Tommy Henriksen. Stops include The O2 in London, Cardiff Castle for the Depot Live series, Scarborough Open Air Theatre, Glasgow's OVO Hydro, Manchester's AO Arena, Birmingham's Utilita Arena, Colchester Castle Summer Series and the Live At The Piece Hall series in Halifax.
Hollywood Vampires released their sophomore album, 'Rise', in 2019, followed by their first live record, 'Live In Rio', in 2023.
It was recently announced that May will accompany The Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood at intimate shows in London and Cologne in August and September, respectively. She released her latest studio album, '11 Past The Hour', in 2021 and recently wrapped up a run of UK dates, billed as the Raised On Songs & Stories Tour.
