Lankum vocalist Radie Peat has shared her debut solo single.
Released via Rough Trade Records, Still I Love Him is an interpretation of the popular traditional love song, which was uncovered by Peat's friend and collaborator, folk artist John Francis Flynn, in the Irish Traditional Music Archives. He wrote a new melody to accompany it, which Peat reshaped with her contralto arrangements. She said:
"I like indirect. I don’t like being too explicit and I wanted the freedom to make decisions around my voice without having to explain myself. Creating emotional connection, that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m trying to capture the elation and devastation that can accompany obsessive love.
"John discovered the song in an archive titled “True Love”, I found that so dark – even though you suffer – because of the amount you love someone – you stay, you carry on.
"I was trying to show the two sides of the coin here, I was trying to get across the two extremes that can exist when we are experiencing love. I was representing his escalating bad behaviour with minor chords and sombre tones. There has to be great love to go through that suffering – I wanted the chorus brimming and gushing with romance represented in the vocals and instrumentally with the strings."
Peat has three solo shows in the diary; a performance at London's Union Chapel on November 3, Dublin's Vicar Street on November 20 and Amsterdam's Paradiso on January 31. Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time on Friday (July 10).
Lankum released their Mercury and Ivor Novello Award-nominated fourth studio album, ‘False Lankum', in 2023, followed by 'Live in Dublin' in 2024. Last October, they shared a cover of The Specials' 1982 number one single Ghost Town, which was released on 12" vinyl in January.
