Muse Vs Glenn Beck: The Twist In The Tail

A few weeks ago you may have seen the news about the transatlantic bust-up between Brit Rockers Muse and notorious, American conservative big mouth, Glenn Beck. Love or hate the guy, the man knows how to kick-up some controversy! Now, if you’re not familiar with Glenn Beck, it should be known that this is not a man who watches his tongue. Known for his out-spoken right-wing views on his own TV and radio shows, he is currently embroiled in a scandal over remarks he made in July, when he referred to President Obama as “a racist”. As you can see, notorious, big mouth, out-spoken, controversy. Words that may be all starting to make sense now.

As if this wasn’t enough for Beck to be involved with, it was also reported recently that the already under-fire fox TV presenter has crossed swords with prog-rock trio Muse during the September 16th edition of his morning radio show, ‘The Glenn Beck Program’. During the show, just after playing new song “United States of Eurasia” Beck hailed the new track, saying that the song was the bands denouncement of “one world government”. He went on to rave about their new album ‘The Resistance’ labelling it “fantastic”, and also gave high praise to the band in general mentioning that, “These guys are brilliant, they know the time that we live in. They are libertarians from England. All of the lyrics are just dead on, on what’s coming our way”.

So, does this mean that Muse perhaps have some secret talent in predicting the future? I for one would like to know. Perhaps I can email them my lottery numbers for next week.

Ok, ok, Glenn! We get it, you LOVE Muse and their new album and their lyrics...give it a rest will you! But to top all that, the DJ, who really must’ve been very excited about the new album, even went as far to continue his praise via his page on social networking site ‘Twitter’. He announced that, “New Muse CD. Amazing. These guys are right on the money. Lyrics on target, talent off the charts. They get it. Libertarian!”

You might be thinking by now that the Muse PR department are possibly celebrating Christmas early. They have one of America’s most renowned TV and radio personalities promoting the bands new album to the masses. Result! However, it was reported that by the end of the radio broadcast Beck was contacted by representation of Muse in the form of an email demanding the DJ re-tract his statements as they were furious at Beck’s adoption of the band.

As a result of this, Beck went on to announce on air, “I just got an email from representation of Muse. They would like me to retract my endorsement. My apologies to Muse for saying that I like them. I didn’t mean to destroy all their credibility and coolness”. Beck concluded with, “Let me just set the record straight. Muse – I hate them. It’s an awful album and you should never go out and buy it”.

All a bit bizarre hey? Well, get this, in the latest twist in the story, it is now said that Glenn ‘I-love-Muse’ Beck (I’m pretty sure he deed-poll’d it) in fact simply invented the supposed ‘row’ with Muse, which only actually existed in his head.

Now, obviously tired with public speaking – for a change - a spokesman for Beck only a few days ago confirmed things by announcing, “After raving about Muse for four minutes, Glenn made a joke about their (Muse) representation emailing him to stop. While it is entirely possible that Muse do not like having Glenn as a fan, he was making a joke and their representation never reached out to him”.

So where does that lead us now? I suppose still wondering if Glenn Beck does actually like the band Muse. Does he or doesn’t he, what’s going on? One could say that the reason for the ‘falling out’, or not, as the case may be, could be down to that fact that Muse are now household names in USA after reaching No.3 in the billboard charts. Perhaps a publicity stunt too far that has just left everyone…err... a bit cross-eyed and head scratchy.

Muse, perhaps more concerned with Super Massive Black Holes in space or most likely busy touring, firmly refused to comment on the issue. I can’t say I blame them. I have a headache.
