Carl Barat: 'The Libertines Will Reform Next Year'

Indie kings The Libertines could possibly be set to reunite next year, if songwriter Carl Barat can work things out and get his way.

The Libertines were thrown up from the bowels of London, a band described as being able to write angelic hymns direct from the City’s underbelly. Over the distance of two great albums the band has brought back what it meant to make music is modern Britain, inspiring almost ten years of copyists.

Since splitting in 2004, the band has reunited many times. Although every time the reunion has tried to be made permanent the separate careers of both Pete Doherty and Carl Barat have proved to be too busy for The Libertines to stick around.

However, last year it did look as though The Libertines were finally back. They gigged at London’s Rhythm Factory and when speaking to press after the show, Pete Doherty announced he would love to reform the band, but was just too occupied with Babyshambles.

Now former band mate and song writing partner Carl Barat has suggested in a new interview that the band will reform next year. Speaking to The Evening Standard the singer claimed, “"It's not definite. I can say 2011, but it's hard to plan The Libertines until next Tuesday. But 2011 is where there's room for that to happen. So if everything's all right, then, yeah, it would be glorious to get on the old jacket and venture forth, into the unknown."

Now the big question would be to see if the old chemistry still exists between Barat and Doherty. Barat continued to explain that it would have to be checked first. “If it works, and there’s a window for that, no a window makes it sound like a business meeting. If there’s a doorway, then certainly we’ll go through it.”

Once asked about his partner’s “bad habits”, Carl Barat said “Well, once he's settled into his grooves, and he's fine, and he's not hurting himself or anyone else, then that's all fine with me." Referring to Doherty’s much publicised drug problems.
