Crewe Alexandra Football Club were formed in 1877, founded by men who worked for the railway, who previously played for the local rugby and cricket clubs.
Their name comes from an amalgamation of the town's name and the high regard in which they held Princess Alexandra of Denmark, the Queen Consort of the United Kingdom, being the wife of King Edward VII. They are nicknamed The Railwaymen because of the town's links with the rail industry, and play their home matches at Gresty Road, or the Alexandra Stadium, currently known as the Mornflake Stadium for sponsorship reasons.
