Celtic Football Club was founded by Brother Walfrid in 1887 at a meeting in St. Mary's Church hall in the Calton district of Glasgow, Scotland. Initially set up to raise funds for poor Irish families in Scotland, the club's Irish roots are still felt at Celtic Park today in the Irish folk songs sung among their fans.

Celtic's biggest rival is Rangers Football Club, another team based in Glasgow. The rivalry is one of the fiercest in the world, matching the intensity of the likes of El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Known as the Old Firm derby, the rivalry extends past the limits of football and into deeper themes of national identity, politics and religion.

Their most commonly used nickname is The Bhoys, which dates back to the foundation of the club. They've won the Scottish League Championship 51 times, the Scottish Cup a record 40 times, the Scottish League Cup 20 times and the European Cup once.
