DEPORTIVO - Girl Next Door - Single Review

London based 5 piece Deportivo release their debut single Girl Next Door, as part of a three track compilation, available on the 12th of July.

The group who have been likened to a male Kate Nash, due to their down to earth and relevant lyrics and catchy urban sound, also draw a likeness to Blur, The Streets and 80’s pop acts such as Squeeze and XTC.

Catchy lyrics, urban grit, tight guitar riffs and a poppy toe tapping rhythm dictate the proceedings, it is a fresh sound layered with samples and keyboards, it’s not reinventing the wheel or life changing, it is simple urban pop, done well, without the over production often used.

ImageGirl Next Door is the headline track on the compilation, it is a simple track, with single key beats, plodding drum rhythm, basic, warm bass sections and gentle guitar riffs. The chorus is extremely catchy and very Blur like. The lyrics are relevant and well thought out and the vocals simple and approachable. This is a very good debut single, fresh, well delivered English pop/rock.

The second track is the Girl Next Door (Arclite Remix Feat Class A.) The remix is not as impressive or fresh sounding, but hey it’s a remix, the use of electro beats, sampling and rapping shows a variance in approach and the sound is something not too dissimilar from a lot of the Urban R and B acts, dominating the charts right now and The Streets certainly did OK producing tracks similar to this.

Cold In The Middle is a heavier sound, nice guitar riffs, impressive warm bass sound and a good drum tempo. The lyrics are again fresh and relevant and the chorus again sounds like Brit Pop Idols Blur. The vocal range on show is good and definitely shows a real promise for future material. It’s nice and catchy, approachable and funky.

The compilation is definitely worthy of a listen, it is new and exciting, without being too different or unapproachable. The lyrics are good and the pop sounds of guitars and keyboards work well. The single Girl Next Door is a very good track and I’m sure the group will go down well during the gigs they have lined up at the Troy Bar on the 21st of July and Gig In The Park on August 7th.
