SHINE 2009 - ASSOCIATES (EP Review)

Finnish duo Shine 2009’s debut EP, Associates, is a dreamy, melodic collection of tracks which defy the fact that summer is on its way out, if it ever started that is.

The self released EP, available on the 6th September, is by no means the best lyrical, vocal or musical work you will ever hear, however it is one of the catchiest, happy, dreamy releases you will hear. This EP, takes you back to the 90’s, whilst remaining fresh and current. The 90’s was a good decade though; we were all younger, life seemed better. No complaints there then, and that is what this record does. It takes your mind back to happier, care free times.

Laced with synths, beats, bass lines and rhythms. This collection of pop music ticks all the right boxes, if upbeat, hedonistic music is your thing. This EP would be the perfect Ibiza chill out mix. Not overly danceable, but not over chilled out, Shine 2009 have got the balance just right and you could listen to this EP anytime, anywhere and be suitably happy.

ImageBeginning with Naturally, this EP stamps its intent, with flowing, relaxed vocals, melodic, electro effected melodies and warm, swooping bass lines. Higher is a blurry, heady fusion of pop and big beats which allow the mind to wander back to those happy memories while New Rules, the EP’s stand out track, hits the Balearic highs that this EP suggests throughout.

Four tracks (including a remix of New Rules) of music that puts right all the world’s wrongs. This may not be the greatest record you will ever listen to, or the most technically excellent. Who gives a damn when it makes you feel this good? From start to finish this EP excels at stimulating the mind and ultimately putting the body at rest.

Warm, infectious and Balearic, this polished presentation of dreamy pop music is a very approachable, pleasure filled hit of happiness.

Stereoboard Rating 9/10.
