Welsh Parody Of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' 'Empire State Of Mind' Removed From Internet

Having become an overnight Internet sensation, the Welsh shot-for-shot parody of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ ‘Empire State of Mind’, entitled ‘Ymerodraeth State of Mind’, has been pulled from YouTube.
For those who haven’t seen the video clip, the parody features an unsigned rapper, Alex Warren, paying tribute to the South Wales town through some very clever and witty lyrics.
Replicating the video of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ homage to New York City, Warren performs alongside Terema Wainwright who can be seen mimicking Alicia Keys by playing a keyboard propped up on a Newport park bench and wailing the hilarious chorus of, “Newport - concrete jumble nothing in order, not far from the border. When you’re in Newport - chips, cheese, curry makes you feel brand new, washed down with a special brew.”
The pair have attracted an internet audience of over two-and-a-half million people logging onto YouTube to watch the video, it even got a mention on the national ITV news. However, despite the success the NME reports that the clip was removed from YouTube due to complaints from the original song’s publishers.
Since the parody video went viral, comedy welsh rappers Goldie Lookin’ Chain have created their retort to the ‘Ymerodraeth State of Mind’. In a new video entitled ‘Newport State of Mind – You’re Not From Newport’, the GLC boys rightly point out that many of rapper Alex Warren’s comedy lyrics don’t actually refer to Newport at all.
Will this mark the beginning of a Newport turf war?
