Sting was last night presented with a songwriting award recognising the ten millionth performance of ‘Every Breath You Take’.
The Annual BMI London awards are an event which celebrates the achievements of songwriters, composers and music publishers, hosted by Broadcast Music Incorporated. Sting was awarded one of the highest awards of the night at the star-studded event in London’s Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane. 'Every Breath You Take' was the only song recognised as having hit such an enormous milestone this year, although other songs were celebrated for their achievements: 'Yesterday' (9 million), ‘Your Song’ (8 million), 'Save The Last Dance For Me' (7 Million), 'Crocodile Rock' (6 million), 'Baker Street' (5 million), 'Candle In The Wind' (5 million).
Other songs who received awards on the night included “Only You Can Love Me This Way”, performed by Keith Urban, which earned the BMI Robert S. Musel Award for Song of the Year, Jay Sean’s “Down” was named BMI College Song of the Year and Cascada’s “Evacuate the Dance Floor,” earned the BMI Dance Award.
Songwriter Don Black, OBE was given the most prestigious award of the night, being named as a BMI Icon. Black joins a list of past ‘icons’ that includes Van Morrison, Donovan, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Ferry and Ray Davies.
