Yonaka - Until You're Satisfied (Album Review)

Arriving nearly seven years after their explosive debut full-length ‘Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow’, it’s easy to assume that Yonaka’s second album didn’t come easily. It’s likely that any member of the Brighton trio would confirm that assumption, but despite any hardship in its creation, ‘Until You’re Satisfied’ lands with the emphatic force of a band that have stared their own ending in the face, and still opted to push forward.

Following a period that found them questioning their future, it’s a collection of songs that sees them more locked-in, confident and instinctive than ever. Produced by bassist Alex Crosby with additional help from Dimitri Tikovoï, it plays straight into the band’s core strengths: massive hooks, jagged riffs, and countless moments that feel restlessly alive.

Pivoting between feral bite and sharp pop instincts, the industrial intensity of Cruel and swagger of Miss Millennial lean into the grittier side of their sound before bursting into huge choruses.

Elsewhere, the arena-ready Eat You Alive is overflowing with raw adrenaline, and Trouble Follows struts into a fresh bluesy lane for the three-piece.

With vocalist Theresa Jarvis having previously opened up about the album’s lyrical focus on love in all its uglier and less glamorous forms, the tender moments within ‘Until You’re Satisfied’ are some of its hardest hitting.

The album’s centrepiece ballad Best Of Me offers a brief retreat from the chaos, but it’s the carefree, quietly hopeful At The Beach that feels truly special here, repurposing some of Yonaka’s signature fury into a gorgeous alt-rock anthem made for late-night drives with the windows down.

Bigger, bolder and more emotionally open than ever before, more than anything, ‘Until You’re Satisfied’ feels like three musicians finding each other again. Stripping things back to basics and emerging with some of their strongest material yet, on album two Yonaka have stepped into their most focused form to date.
