Kings Of Leon Aren’t Playing Nice Guys

Friday, 22 October 2010 Written by James Conlon

Kings Of Leon took a thinly-veiled swipe at Arcade Fire earlier this week, calling the Canadian rock band pretentious “dicks”.

In a recent interview with Spin, an American music magazine, drummer Nathan Followill declared: “Now it's cool to have 14 people in your band doing everything but contributing musically, running around with a helmet on your head, hitting it with a drumstick. You gotta look at what you're in this for: the love of music? The fame? You can have all that if you're smart and play your cards right and don't become a dick.”

The insult (which doesn’t take a code-breaker to decipher) is a reference to the large on-stage collective of Arcade Fire. Kings Of Leon have never been a band to shy away from controversial statement, but Arcade Fire have an equally impressive record of public commentary: Last year the band had an extended online conflict with The Flaming Lips.

It has been a week full of revelations for Kings Of Leon. In an interview with a British newspaper, bassist Jared Followill recently said that he had become addicted to cough syrup during the recording of their hit album ‘Only By The Night’. Followill was apparently prescribed a powerful remedy after he fell sick during their studio sessions, and admits he began over-indulging in the medicine. He said: "I had a cough and got some liquid hydrocodone. It was so good. It is very 1800s of us to get addicted to cough syrup. Some trends just keep coming back."
