It’s been a prolific period for Kings of Leon, fresh from strong reviews for their most recent album ‘Can We Please Have Fun’ and several collaborations with Zach Bryan. Their first EP in more than 20 years marks a return to the raw sound of their early work and, while it might only amount to four tracks, it shows the group haven’t wholly abandoned the formula behind Molly’s Chambers for stadium anthems.
From the pounding drumbeat and dirty riffs of All The Little Sheep, it’s immediately obvious that this is a different kind of project. Caleb Followill’s vocals are in fine form, and the track is full of energy. It’s easy to imagine going down well at a festival.
To Space, meanwhile, has the expansive feel 'Because The Times', built around Jared’s basslines.
It is impressive to see how each band member is given room to flex and showcase their collaborative process even in such a truncated running time.
There is an almost jam-like feel to these tracks, marking an interesting intersection between albums. It will be intriguing to see if this is more the direction their next full LP heads in.
Pit To The Rind is more stripped back, with swampy delta elements. There is a simplicity to it, almost a call-and-response between the vocals and guitar, yet both parts work so well that this is its strength as it builds towards a more expansive climax. The Wolf is more of a short, sharp rock ‘n’ roll number, really capturing the vivacity of the band’s initial approach.
This EP underlines the most productive period for Kings of Leon in some time, reminding fans and critics of why they became such a household in the first place. It ultimately proves there is far more to the family group than simply Sex on Fire, Use Somebody and the gargantuan success of ‘Only By The Night’, the shadow of which they have struggled to escape from in the past decade and a half. They have embraced their garage-rock roots here, while making something that is fun, full of energy and, hopefully, tone-setting for what comes next.
