Arcade Fire Gig Cancelled Over NATO ‘Security Concerns’

Tuesday, 02 November 2010 Written by James Conlon

Arcade Fire have cancelled a gig in Portugal due to security concerns over a NATO summit meeting.

The band were scheduled to kick off their European tour at the Atlantica Pavillion in Lisbon on November 18th, but have been forced to postpone the show by the NATO military alliance, who perceived a potential threat from the inevitable crowds.

A Summit Meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government is due to take place in Lisbon from November 19th-20th. The Lisbon authorities have confessed that their resources would be too stretched to accommodate both of the large-scale events at once.

Arcade Fire's manager has said that the band offered to bring the date of the show forward by a day, but were told that logistically it wasn't possible.

In a statement to Portuguese fans, the band’s manager Scott Rodger explained: "The band are disappointed to be forced into this situation but there's nothing more we can do. We will refund all tickets and we'll endeavour to get back to see our fans in Portugal as soon as we can."

Tickets will be refunded in full at the point of purchase from November 3rd onwards. Arcade Fire are set to continue with their other European dates, now beginning on November 20th in Madrid.

The band will play the following UK and Irish tour dates:

Dec 1st - London O2 Arena
Dec 2nd - London O2 Arena
Dec 5th - Dublin O2 (On Sale August 20th)
Dec 8th - Birmingham LG Arena
Dec 9th - Cardiff International Arena
Dec 11th - Manchester Central
Dec 12th - Glasgow SECC
