Take That's new album 'Progress' looks likely to top the UK albums chart this week. The record is leading the way, beating off competition after only one day of sales.
The new album, which is the first since original member Robbie Williams rejoined the band, was released on Monday (November 15th). 'Progress' has sold over 235,000 copies in its first 24 hours, making it the fastest selling record of the decade. If early figures are to be believed, ‘Progress’ will have no trouble in reaching the top spot for this weekend’s album chart.
The album is also on the verge of breaking Oasis’ first-week sales record, set by their 1997 release ‘Be Here Now’. Overtaking the Gallagher brothers’ record would be more than welcome news for Robbie Williams and his bandmates, after Noel Gallagher famously called him "the fat dancer from Take That" in 2000.
Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbort said: "This is a phenomenal achievement from an already phenomenally successful band.” Despite the good news for their album, the band’s latest single, ‘The Flood’, failed to reach Number One in the singles chart this weekend, after being beaten by Rihanna's 'Only Girl (In The World)'.
Take That performed together for the first time on this weekend’s X Factor show alongside Westlife and JLS. The band are set to embark on a giant sell-out UK tour next May.
