Sucioperro - Threads (Single Review)

“Inside my heart, there is a part that can never get over you.”

The amount of quality in the Scottish alternative rock scene at the moment is truly stupendous. Biffy Clyro have gone all the way to arena stardom whilst the likes of Twin Atlantic and The Xcerts are considered to be well on their way to glory. Meanwhile Biffy’s fellow Ayrshire trio Sucioperro are still ploughing their furrow. Despite being totally ignored by the mainstream music press and population, the band are getting ready to unleash their third record, ‘The Heart String and How to Pull On It’. Why they have been ignored is a total mystery to their devoted army of fans.

ImageNew single ‘Threads’, the first to be released from ‘The Heart String...’, certainly does not help solve the conundrum. Whilst it is easy to see why many of the brilliant experimental bands around the world never become commercially successful acts, it is less easy with the bands that write genuinely brilliant songs. Sucioperro are one of these bands. Frontman J.P. Reid is a songwriter capable of instantly memorable choruses alongside full-blooded rock riffage and ‘Threads’ is straight out of the top draw in this category. One of the most anthemic and melodic offerings that the band have produced to date, ‘Threads’ is driven by edgily chiming guitars over a wonderfully propulsive rhythm section provided by bassist Stewart Chown and drummer Fergus Munro. Towards the end of the song things break down into a heavier section with Reid almost screaming out the words; “Inside my head I love her”. On this track Reid sings of the rigours of love and being unable to break the “thread” that connects him to his love. No, it’s nothing incredibly original but it is so earnest, so honest in its delivery that it is hard to prevent yourself falling in love with the song upon first listen.

Essentially ‘Threads’ is a pop song. A pop song that rocks. Hard. Perhaps it appeals so much because it is the endeavour of a band that bleeds for music, much like the work of the aforementioned Biffy Clyro, but is it not more likely that Sucioperro are just a band with awesome songs? The mainstream can keep the likes of Kings of Leon and Paramore if it wants. Down here we are more than delighted with our lot if it means we can have the likes of Sucioperro writing our anthems of hope and love, as long as they survive to keep on giving us these anthems for many years to come. Roll on the new album.

Stereoboard Single Rating: 9/10
