Take That Row With Simon Cowell Over ‘Riot Police’ Performance

Wednesday, 15 December 2010 Written by James Conlon

Chart-topping boyband Take That argued with Simon Cowell over their X Factor performance last weekend, it has recently been revealed. The band had originally conceived the idea of performing a ‘riot police’ themed performance for their upcoming single, ‘Kidz’, however Simon Cowell is said to have stepped in at the last minute to veto the performance on the grounds of it being ‘innapropriate’.

The band had initially wanted over fifty backing dancers to appear wearing riot police clothing for their performance on Sunday night’s X Factor, however Cowell dismissed the idea, claiming that it was insensitive to this week’s student demonstrations, which were marred by sporadic cases of violence. A spokesman for the band said: "It was decided after (the) afternoon's rehearsals that the timing and content of the performance was not appropriate so soon after the violence that erupted at protests in London".

A source from the show also declared: "When Simon found out about the riot cop gear he was upset. Simon told Take That it was insensitive and inappropriate and asked them to change things."

"For him X Factor is an entertainment show pure and simple. It's about people having a good time. It's not about politics. It was touch and go for a minute as they were threatening to walk out but Simon stood firm. He'd rather have filled the three minutes with something else.”

Although Take That are said to have threatened to pull out of the performance, the band eventually settled in performing their recent single ‘The Flood’ to the audience of over twenty million viewers.
