Paul McCartney has reached out to ask Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to introduce a national ‘Vegetarian Day’ in the country. In a letter to Singh, the ex-Beatle suggested that a nationwide meat-free day would help to save animals as well as taking important steps towards saving the environment.
McCartney, who has been a vegetarian activist since the 1970’s, declared that the formation of an Indian Vegetarian Day “would be a celebration of life” and an extremely beneficial move for the country. The singer suggested that January 12th, the founding anniversary of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), should be the date on which the celebration is held. He said: “Such a declaration would save countless animals, reduce environmental devastation caused by the meat industry and help participants clear their arteries and their conscience. It would be a celebration of life - all life."
As a long-standing advocate of vegetarianism, McCartney has never had any concerns about making his opinion heard. In an interview with PETA last year, the singer made an open plea to the public, declaring: “I would urge everyone to think about taking this simple step to help our precious environment and save it for the children of the future.”
