The BBC has announced that the Electric Proms, which ran every year since 2006, will be cancelled this year in an attempt to help save at least £46million.
The Proms, often hosted at the Roundhouse Cafe in London, had become an annual event which attracted guests from all over the world – but now has been affected by cutbacks which will see 1,000 BBC staff lose their jobs.
There is, however, some hope for fans of the Proms – head of BBC Radio 2 and ‘6 Music’ Bob Shennan has talked of the possibility of the Proms being replaced by staging living events instead. One event coming up is the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, at which Laura Marling and Bellowhead will be performing.
"In the current climate we are faced with making difficult decisions, including how to best deliver high-quality live music programming throughout the year in light of continuing efficiency savings.", Shennan said.
"I feel that Radio 2 can achieve the same impact of the Electric Proms in an alternative, more cost-effective way."
The Electric Proms have seen artists like Robbie Williams, Oasis, Dizzee Rascal, Dame Shirley Bassey, Robert Plant and Elton John grace the stage, and is surely going to be missed by people across the country.
Although nothing has been said specifically about an event next year, the future does not look bright for the axed show.
