Tinie Tempah, Arcade Fire And Mumford & Sons Win Big At Brit Awards 2011

Tinie Tempah, Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons emerged as the main winners at this year’s prestigious Brit Awards. The three acts were the main winners in a night full of surprise victories and show-stopping performances at London’s O2 Arena.

Tinie Tempah walked away with ‘British Breakthough Act’ and ‘British Single’ for ‘Pass Out’. The rapper took to the stage in jubilant fashion, sporting a bold white blazer and his trademark glasses before performing a show-stopping medley of his 2010 hits. The performance, which called on the assistance of his production collaborator Labrinth, featured an impressive lazer and firework display which wowed the London audience.

Canadian rockers Arcade Fire also won two awards, taking home the prize for ‘Best International Group’ and ‘Best International Album’ for their hit third LP ‘The Suburbs’. The biggest award of the evening was handed to Mumford and Sons, who picked up ‘Mastercard British Album Of The Year’ for their 2009 effort ‘Sigh No More’. The verdict was a big surprise to the London audience, many of who expected pop goliaths Take That or Tinie Tempah to collect the award. Mumford & Sons had previously performed a restrained version of their song ‘Timshel‘, where the band gathered around a single microphone allowing their restrained sound to fall all the more impressively on the quiet audience.

One of the biggest surprises of the evening was folk songstress Laura Marling winning the award for ‘Best British Female Solo Artist’. Up against the likes of Cheryl Cole and Ellie Goulding, the singer gave a bemused acceptance speech, looking as if she were in complete disbelief herself at the unexpected verdict.

Other key performances in the ceremony included a haunting rendition of ‘Someone Like You’ from current chart-topper Adele and a theatrical medley from rapper-turned-soul singer Plan B, who recruited a team of violent dancers and even a man on fire as part of his performance.
