Moby: “Major Labels Should Just Die”

Thursday, 03 March 2011 Written by James Conlon

Moby has slammed major labels this week during a ‘musician’s table’ discussion at a Los Angeles University. The American electronica musician made the comments during a conversation hosted by KCRW’s ‘Morning Becomes Electric’ at UCLA.

Speaking during the discussion, which also included Raphael Saadiq and TV on the Radio’s David Sitek, Moby said: "I truly believe, as an institution, most major labels should just die."

"There was a time when the music business was incredibly monolithic and there were only two ways to get your music heard: sign to a major label, get your music played on MTV and get it played by big radio stations." He continued.

"Thank God, that period has come to an end...signing to a major, for 99.9% of the musicians on the planet, is the worst thing they could do. They've treated musicians badly. They've treated fans badly. They've treated the music badly, most importantly. For that reason, they either need to reinvent themselves or die quietly."

Moby's comments were echoed by the majority of the panel, in particular by David Sitek who pushed the concept further, saying: "Don't be under the impression that they have any concern for what anyone on this panel, or most of the people we know, do. It seems like it's run by paedophiles trying to push the next ring tone."

Moby's is set to release his twelfth studio album, ‘Destroyed’ on May 17th through the independent label Mute Records. You can listen to lead single, ‘Be The One’ here:
