Moby has laid out plans for his 23rd studio album.
The award-winning singer-songwriter, DJ and producer will release 'Future Quiet' on February 20 via BMG, following up 2024's 'Always Centered At Night'. Featuring 11 tracks spanning sparse piano arrangements and ambient soundscapes, as well as a number of vocal contributions, the album draws on our online lives and the basic human need to slow down and be still. Moby explained:
"'Future Quiet' is, not surprisingly, quiet. To be clear; I love bombast. I love excess and volume. But as the world gets louder and crazier I find myself needing the refuge of quiet, both as a listener and as a musician. For me, and hopefully for others, 'Future Quiet' is a refuge. The world, self-evidently, is more demanding than it’s ever been. The world screams at us, our screens scream at us, other people scream at us, and to retreat from the screaming we need safety and refuge. That for me is the goal of ‘Future Quiet’. Writing and recording it was a refuge for me, and I hope that listening to it is a refuge for you.
"When I was growing up I played in hardcore punk rock bands, and I DJed VERY LOUD hip hop and house music and industrial music, but I also needed the refuge of quiet records like This Mortal Coil, The Cocteau Twins, Eno and Bowie’s ambient music, Gorecki, Arvo Part, etc. ‘Future Quiet’ is definitely the product of my influences, as I can't count the number of times I’ve listened to ‘Song to the Siren’ or Joy Division's ‘Atmosphere.’"
Alongside the announcement, Moby has shared the record's opening track and lead single, a lush, symphonic reworking of When It's Cold I'd Like To Die featuring Jacob Lusk (pictured with Moby), the singer for Gabriels.
"I first heard Jacob’s voice on KCRW when they started playing Love and Hate in A Different Time," Moby recalled. "And, like anyone who's heard Jacob sing, I immediately fell in love with his voice. After hearing him sing on the radio, I spent weeks tracking him down and begging him to work with me. And, lucky me, he agreed. The results speak for themselves, as his vocals on When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die are, I say with something approaching objectivity, transcendent."
The original version of When It's Cold I'd Like To Die features vocalist Mimi Goese and appears on Moby's third album, 1995's 'Everything Is Wrong'. The track recently received renewed attention following its appearance in seasons one and four of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Moby commented:
“It’s reaching hundreds of millions of people annually, which is both wonderful and surprising, especially as it was an obscure song with no drums or bass and was never released as a single."
Moby will return to the UK to headline Brighton Beach with a full live band on July 26 for the closing day of On The Beach Festival, marking his first performance in Brighton in over 25 years. Tickets go on general sale at 10am on January 21.
He'll also play a show in Mexico City in March, California's Coachella in April, and several European festivals in the summer as part of his biggest tour in a decade, which is to be announced soon.
