‘Top Of The Pops’ Set For Return On BBC4

Thursday, 31 March 2011 Written by James Conlon

‘Top Of The Pops’ is set to make a return to the BBC next month, according to The Metro. The popular music show ran for over forty years before being axed in 2006, however it has been announced today that it will return on Thursday nights from April 7th.

Despite the promising news, music fans should hold on to their hats: the BBC will only be airing classic episodes of the hit music programme, and have made a clear statement that they do not intend to record more episodes.

The decision to axe the show in 2006 was met with backlash from large parts of the music industry, who identified the rare opportunities available for artists to perform on primetime television. There have been several discussions about the possibility of bringing the show back in recent years, with pop mogul Simon Cowell even reportedly interested in spearheading the programme’s rejuvenation.

Speaking on the decision to bring back the show without filming new material, journalist Peter Robinson said: "What really f*cks me off about the BBC4 wheeling out classic TOTP episodes from 1976 onwards is that they are admitting how culturally important TOTP was as a cultural record, but they don't seem to mind that pop music in 2011 is not being archived in a similar way."
