Friendly Fires have hinted that their upcoming LP is more pop-orientated than their 2008 self-titled debut. The ‘Jump In The Pool’ three-piece revealed that their sophomore effort ‘Pala’ is influenced by 90’s pop music as well as their usual dance/electronic background.
Speaking to BBC’s Newsbeat, singer Ed Macfarlane said that the new album sounds "like *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys but played with a breathless beat and weird guitar".
Macfarlane continued: "There were moments when we were recording where we were debating if it was sounding too poppy. As things progressed, I think that's what I like most about this record. It sounds overtly sheeny and poppy to my ears. It's really unashamed."
However, he was clearly unashamed of the band’s new direction, saying: "It stands out from a lot of records. It's what 2011 needs. It needs bright, uplifting, vibrant music. I felt in 2010 music was very black and white and the music was quite minimalist. Summer's coming and people need to hear something uplifting."
Macfarlane also confessed that the band were relieved to end their two-year touring cycle in 2010. He said: "It was definitely a relief to say, 'Right this is it, first album done'. It was the start of a new chapter. It was quite daunting going into the studio, like, 'How do I write music again?'"
‘Pala’ is scheduled for release on 16th May. You can listen to 'Live Those Days Tonight', the lead single from ‘Pala’, below:
