Bon Iver has unveiled a new track ‘Calgary’ online. The song is the first taste of Bon Iver’s self-titled, second album, which is scheduled for release on June 20th in the UK.
The track is sure to satiate Bon Iver’s dedicated fans, opening with understated, melancholic brass tones before opening up with a number of harmonies to form something a little bit special.
Speaking about his second record, Wisconsin songwriter Justin Vernon confessed that he had some difficulty in writing the album originally. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Vernon said: “Somewhere along the line, I forgot how to write songs. I couldn’t do it anymore with a guitar. It wasn’t happening.”
His debut ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ was a notoriously solitary effort, written and recorded almost entirely at a remote cabin in Wisconsin. However, Vernon confessed that he was unable to take such a retreated approach to his sophomore effort. He said: “I brought in a lot of people to change my voice — not my singing voice, but my role as the author of this band, this project. I built the record myself, but I allowed those people to come in and change the scene.”
Bon Iver have no doubt picked up a lot of new fans over the past 12 months, with a number of collaborations on Kanye West’s ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ and an acclaimed performance alongside the rapper at this year’s Coachella festval. However, it remains to be seen if those new ears will translate to commercial success for their second effort.
