Amazon.com have left customers disgruntled after offering Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ for 99c (60p). The online retailers suffered technical problems soon after launching the generous offer, finding that even their mammoth severs were unable to handle the demand of so many people looking to acquire the LP.
Amazon made the album available on Monday (May 23rd) through their ‘Cloud Drive’ service, a newly-launched competitor for Apple’s iTunes. However, their music locker system struggled to cope with the extensive demand brought about by Gaga’s fans, causing many customers to experience problems with connection.
Speaking on the site’s comment page, one girl expressed her frustration, saying: “I was really excited about this deal and I was thinking about purchasing a copy for my girlfriend in addition to purchasing my own. However, I can only access six of the songs on my cloud drive, so I don’t think I’ll be purchasing another copy. The other songs appear in my cloud, but I’m unable to download or even play them.”
The move to sell Gaga’s album at such a slashed price has also left music companies frustrated, after the online retailers chose not to get any other companies involved as partners on the deal. Amazon were able to make the offer by “taking a hit” financially on the record, chosing to pay the wholesale price of the album themselves to draw in new customers to their Cloud Drive service.
In addition to the album, 99c would have also bought a customer a free upgrade to a full 20GB storage account, which normally costs twenty dollars a year. Lady Gaga’s representatives are yet to make a comment on the Amazon system failure.
