Lady Gaga’s management have denied claims that the singer pocketed money from her Japanese tsunami relief effort. Representatives for the singer have claimed that a lawsuit filed by Detroit legal network 1-800-Law-Firm is "misguided" and "without merit."
Gaga has been accused of taking money from sales of her ‘We Pray For Japan’ wristbands, choosing to add additional costs for shipping and taxes in order to ensure that she receives more profit from the charitable conations.
All proceeds from the wristbands, designed by the singer, were declared to have gone to victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami, with £2.49 for shipping and 37p for taxes added onto the $5 charge for the bracelets.
Speaking in a statement about the lawsuit, Gaga’s management said: "This misguided lawsuit is without merit and unfortunately takes attention away from the kind deeds of the fans around the world who are supporting the people of Japan.”
They continued: "The entire $5 donation made with the purchase of each bracelet is going to support the disaster relief. No profit is being made on shipping costs. Sales tax charges were made in accordance with local legal requirements. Lady Gaga has personally pledged her own funds to this cause and continues to support the victims of the disaster."
Lady Gaga is believed to have donated around $3 million of her own money to the Japanes relief fund immediately after the disaster occurred in March.
