‘Godmother of Punk’ Patti Smith to Release New ‘Best of’ Compilation

Thursday, 18 August 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

Punk rock poet Patti Smith – known fondly by fans as the ‘Godmother of Punk’ – is due to release a new ‘Best of’ compilation entitled ‘Outside Society’ on 12th September. The compilation features a collection of 18 songs taken from each of her 10 albums released between 1975 and 2007.

Speaking about one her most well-known tracks ‘Because the Night’, Patti said: “Bruce Springsteen gave me a great gift in allowing me to lend verses to his beautifully constructed anthem. My contribution was written for my future husband, Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith. Though we have performed it hundreds of times, the strong response it draws always makes it fresh and exciting to sing.”

Patti Smith released her debut album ‘Horses’ in 1975, which is widely recognised for its influence on the New York punk scene of the late 70s. Last year, she released an autobiographical memoir entitled ‘Just Kids’, which went on to win the National Book Award following its publication in the US. Artists including Michael Stipe, Morrissey, Shirley Manson and KT Tunstall have previously cited Patti Smith as an influence. In 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
