U2 To Support Irish Music Education With €5 Million Donation

Irish rockers U2 have made a charitable donation to their native countries’ music education system, as the Ireland faces cuts of over €6billion to match the terms of its €100billion bailout by the Europe and International Monetary fund.

The band, who were named the highest earning musicians of the past year by Forbes, will hand over the cash through a four year period from now until 2015, alongside a €2million contribution from Ireland Funds. U2 hope that by 2015, the government will be in a position to take over the funding of music education. Rosaleen Molloy, director of Music Generation (U2’s funding organisation), spoke of he donation.

“While we have a very rich musical culture and heritage, access to music tuition is like a geographic lottery, it depends on where you live and it depends if your parents can afford it.

“There is an assumption that music is being provided for in mainstream schools, while in the reality it is not. U2 had been looking for some time for a way to invest and support access to music education in Ireland, and U2 wanted to give something back.”

The money is believed to be spent on after school music classes for over 16,000 Irish children.
