Antlered Man - Buddhist Soup (Giftes 1) (Mini Album Review)

One thing needs to be cleared up right at the start of this review. Antlered Man are brilliant. There is something about their skewed take on alt-rock that makes them ridiculously appealing, despite the fact that all their songs seem determined to change pace at awkward moments and verge on being pretty disturbing most of the time. Don’t be fooled by the lullaby-esque melodies at the heart of 'If You Can’t Beat Them, Try Solvents', for example. This is a band that are here to drag you into the murkiness where they belong.

What an individual band they are as well. There simply isn’t anybody else about at the moment that would combine whistling and walls of rock solid guitars in the way that Antlered Man do on title track 'Buddhist Soup'. There probably aren’t many bands who would end their debut mini-album with screams of “what sick mother fucker would invent a man?!” either. Whether it’s the insanely catchy 'Outrages 1 ta 3' or the furious closer 'Platoono of Uno', Antlered Man are proving themselves experts at their craft. The only real problem with 'Buddhist Soup (Giftes 1)' is that it’s only five tracks long…their unique approach would prove listenable at least for twice as long.

Bring on a full-length album.

'Buddhist Soup (Giftes 1)' is available from 10th October 2011 from www.antleredman.bandcamp.com in both digital and physical format. The entire mini-album is being streamed now on Antlered Man’s Facebook page. Antlered Man hold a free release party at London’s The Macbeth on 4th October.
