Stereoboard’s Top 10 Live Events in October 2011 (Feature)

Friday, 30 September 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

You’ve been well and truly spoiled for choice with the amount of gigs on offer this autumn, so having to pick just 10 from the list of top gigs in October was far from an easy task. However, as always, we struggled and strived and eventually managed to dwindle the seemingly endless list down to just a couple of handfuls for you to choose from. Enjoy…

Arctic Monkeys
Earlier this year, Arctic Monkeys – the band that Noel Gallagher once predicted wouldn’t make it “with a name like that” – released their fourth album and their fourth to reach the top spot of the UK Albums Chart. After the release of their previous effort ‘Humbug’, which was noted as a major departure from the band’s earlier work and left many fans feeling ever-so-slightly confused, ‘Suck It and See’ was yet another deviation… although possibly a much more likeable one. At the tail-end of October, Arctic Monkeys will be taking the album on the road with some major UK arena dates, including two at London’s O2. With The Vaccines providing main support, this is a definite contender for tour of the month.

Ash
Northern Ireland rock trio Ash may be long past their best days, but that doesn’t mean we can’t all look back and enjoy what they had to offer back then. After all, that’s exactly what the band are doing in October. Yes, in just a few weeks time, Ash will be heading back out on the road to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their third album ‘Free All Angels’ – that’s the one that gave us a few of their old favourites such as ‘Burn Baby Burn’ and ‘Shining Light’. Not only that, but they’re taking their former bandmate Charlotte Hatherley along with them for the ride.

Bombay Bicycle Club
Last month, London-based folk-rockers Bombay Bicycle Club released their third and most successful album to date, ‘A Different Kind of Fix’, which reached Number 6 in the UK Albums Chart. After last year’s ‘Flaws’ – another hugely well-received release – which was noted for its largely acoustic sound, the band’s latest offering marks a return to the style of their 2009 debut ‘I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose’. Having released three albums in three years, Bombay Bicycle Club will no doubt be looking to take a break sometime soon, although not just yet. Firstly, they’ll be taking the new album out on the road for a major tour of the UK, culminating with a huge date at London’s O2 Brixton Academy.

Chase and Status
Drum and bass duo Chase and Status began 2011 with a bang by releasing their second album ‘No More Idols’, which featured collaborations with the likes of Plan B, Maverick Sabre, Tinie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal, Cee-Lo Green and White Lies. Following its release, the album fell just slightly short of the top spot, reaching a very respectable Number Two in the UK Albums Chart and sending the duo to the pinnacle of the UK dance scene. Chase and Status will be heading out on a major October tour, which will see them into the next month. With few tickets remaining, this is without a doubt one of the most hotly-anticipated tours of the year.

The Horrors
Earlier this year, Southend’s The Horrors released their third album ‘Skying’, which quickly became the group’s most successful offering to date, reaching an impressive Number 5 in the UK Albums Chart. In addition to its reception by fans, ‘Skying’ was also a huge hit with the critics, many of whom awarded it a shining review. October will see The Horrors taking the album out on the road for what is likely to be an enjoyable outing for all.

The Kooks
Brighton’s The Kooks are another band to have released their third album in 2011. In this case, ‘Junk of the Heart’ appeared in September and, despite not reaching the dizzying heights of the band’s first two efforts – reaching a modest Number 10 in the UK Albums Chart – it certainly seems to have made a good impression amongst fans. A fitting way to introduce their upcoming tour dates around the country.

Noel Gallagher
After a mixed and largely apathetic response to Beady Eye’s debut album ‘Different Gear, Still Speeding’, which came out earlier this year, the speculation surrounding Noel Gallagher’s debut effort outside of Oasis is already beginning to cause quite a kerfuffle. Fortunately, the wait is almost over as Noel Gallagher’s ‘High Flying Birds’ flies into town in October, followed shortly after by some headlining dates.

PJ Harvey
After becoming the first-ever artist to take home the Mercury Prize for the second time in September, solo artist PJ Harvey will be celebrating her big win with two dates at the Royal Albert Hall late in October. That’s a pretty impressive way to celebrate a 20-year career in the business, as anyone who has heard ‘Let England Shake’ will agree.

The Specials
When Coventry ska legends The Specials reformed two years ago to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut album with a huge UK tour, it was seen as one of the reunions of the decade. Well, it you missed out on that occasion, you’ll be pleased to hear that they’re doing it all over again in October. With no talk of new material or any further shows, this is likely to be your last change to hear the likes of ‘Ghost Town’ and ‘Message To You Rudy’ in all their live glory, so catch them while you can.

You Me At Six
October will see the release of the third album from Surrey quintet You Me At Six, ‘Sinners Never Sleep’, as well as some of the band’s biggest gigs to date. Following last year’s release of their second album ‘Hold Me Down’, which reached Number 5 in the UK Albums Chart, along with their growing reputation as one of the country’s – if not the world’s - best pop-punk acts, this month is likely to be the start of a perfect way to end You Me At Six’s 2011.
