People Are Going To Stop Buying CDs Claims Sting

Former Police frontman Sting has given his view on iOS apps and the traditional CD, which, in his opinion, won't be around for much longer.

The bassist, who released his own 'Sting 25' app this week, revealed to Billboard that he agreed to the design and release of the new app as an alternative method of “getting music to the people”, echoing points raised in a recent Stereoboard Feature published earlier this week.

Sting explained his reasons behind the release of the app, saying: "People are going to stop buying CDs. People are going to stop selling and making them, so I am looking for different ways to get music to people, and the [app] at the moment seems to be the favourite … The app is the new model."

The 'Sting 25 app' accompanies a traditional CD box set and includes photos, lyrics, interviews and concert footage from Sting's solo career. The app can also be updated by the user over time.

"It's very full and can also be constantly updated, so it's not a static thing," Sting said. "It's organic."

In addition to the app, Sting has also released European tour dates for his 2012 'Back to Bass' tour. Currently rolling across North America, Sting's Back to Bass tour celebrates the 25th anniversary of Sting's solo career and features a set full of Sting's most popular hits, stripped down, as they haven't been played in years.

The tour begins in Gateshead, UK at The Sage Gateshead on February 5th 2012 and continues across Europe and the UK. Additional dates will be announced in the coming weeks.
