LIttle Mix Fail To Match Matt Cardle Sales

X-Factor winning girl group Little Mix look like they could be in for their first ever #1 single with ‘Cannonball’ – despite it selling considerably less than last year’s winner Matt Cardle’s debut single.

The track has already sold 68,000 copies since it was released yesterday, putting them in pole position ahead of Coldplay’s ‘Paradise’ and Leona Lewis’ ‘Hurt’, but Cardle’s managed to sell an incredible 439,000 copies in its first week.

Interestingly, the X-Factor winner’s single was released two weeks before its usual date – meaning it will be much harder for Little Mix to achieve the Christmas #1, as they’ll have to stay top for two weeks in a row. Is that a sign of old Simon Cowell admitting defeat to the Facebook campaign to get Nirvana to the crimbo hot-spot?

Similarly to last year, the original version of the X-Factor winner’s single is set to make a return to the charts; Damien Rice’s original version of ‘Cannonball’ has seen a surge in sales and is currently sitting just outside the top ten. Last year, Biffy Clyro’s ‘Many of Horror’, the original version of Cardle’s ‘When We Collide’, reached #8 after it was covered – it’s highest ever chart position.

This week’s #1 will be announced later today at 4pm. Check out Little Mix performing ‘Cannonball’ below.
