Rock N' Roll Drummers 'As Fit As Premiership Footballers'

Any member of a rock band will tell you they are the fittest – but it’s the drummer which deserves the most recognition, after a study found that sticksmen have to be as fit as a Premiership footballer.

Clem Burke, the man behind the kit for Blondie, took the test for an experiment performed by Chichester University, and found that after 90 minutes of drumming, his heart beat had raised to 190 beats per minute. 90 minutes is around an average length for a headline gig, and is also the length of a football match – and Burke’s peak heart rate of 190bpm matched that of many athletes when they perform, especially footballers.

The research also found that just an hour long concert could burn between 400 and 600 calories, helping keep drummers like Burke slim and fit – with Dr Marcus Smith saying: “It is clear that their fitness levels need to be outstanding.”
