Festival-goers in Victoria, Australia were left with an empty stage on New Year’s Eve – after organisers failed to inform the Arctic Monkeys that they were supposed to be conducting the countdown to the New Year.
The indie rock icons were rocking out a headline slot at Falls Festival in Lorne, Victoria, playing for over an hour. After putting on an epic performance, the band said their goodbyes and left the stage – at the time of 11:58pm. The huge crowd was then astonishingly left empty-staged while the rest of the world set off their fireworks and began the party.
Alex Turner and co then quickly returned to the stage, leaving organisers red-faced and with the crowd with a late countdown.
Frontman Turner told the crowd: “Sorry we thought someone else had organised a countdown … let’s do one now then shall we?”
Luckily, the band had wowed the crowd enough to spare the festival chief’s blushes, and Turner later went on to tell the Sydney Morning Herald how he was overwhelmed by the support he had received from their Aussie fans.
“Everyone was singing and we were all kind of blown back. No one feels obligated to sing at our gigs: we're not a sing-a-longy kind of band and sometimes there are quite a lot of words. So when people do sing along they mean it.”
