British soul singer and guitarist Michael Kiwanuka has been selected as the winner of the BBC Sound of 2012 Poll, beating the likes of American rappers Azealia Banks and Frank Ocean.
The 23 year-old newcomer has been making waves in the scene since he released his debut E.P ‘Tell ME a Tale’ in May last year, and is now anticipating the release of his first ever studio album ‘Home Again’, which is set to hit shelves on March 23rd.
“It's very encouraging for some of my music to be noticed and considered as something worth listening to,” Kiwanuka said in a statement. “I think it's every musician's dream to have any sort of recognition for their art, something that is so personal. This is something that I don't take for granted.”
Finishing behind the signer was Azealia Banks in second place, and Frank Ocean in third. Floppy haired ex-emo brostep producer Skrillex managed to finish fourth, while Swedish dance act Niki & the Dove completed the top five.
