'Balls Out' Steel Panther Poster Banned By ASA

Wednesday, 25 January 2012 Written by Elliott Batte

Following on from the story we ran earlier revealing that Lady Gaga’s ’Born This Way’ advert had been cleared of being overtly sexual, Californian parody rockers Steel Panther have now had the poster for their third album ‘Balls Out’ banned by the Advertising Standards Authorities (ASA).

The poster featured a scantily clad woman posing provocatively, holding two steel balls, above the album’s titled ‘Balls Out’. Despite only running from October to November last year, the poster has now been banned after the ASA received hundreds of complaints – including one from a charity that represents women who have suffered domestic abuse and violence.

Universal Records, the bands label, admitted that they could have been more careful with their choice of poster, but also told the ASA that they did not intend to cause any harm or offence to anyone – and denied that the poster could be offensive to women, saying: “the poster was meant to be ludicrously over the top and not meant to undermine women.”

The ASA replied, though, saying that the poster was likely ‘to cause serious and widespread offence’ and was definitely not suitable for underage children.
