Peter Hook Accusses New Order Replacement Tom Chapman of 'Bass Miming'

Bitter bassist Peter Hook has come forward to press to accuse Tom Chapman, the bass player who has replaced Hook as New Order tour, of miming over his original bass parts while the band play live.

Members of New Order decided to get back together last year – even without their original bassist Peter Hook. Hook was totally against the idea and is now extremely angry and bitter over the fact the band, which he formed with Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris back in the 80s, and said that he would do everything he could to stop the band reforming without him – with Hook even threatening legal action over the use of the band’s name.

But, despite the squabbling, the band went ahead with the reformation and have been touring across the world, most recently in Australia and next in the UK. So, as you’d expect from the ever-present voice of Peter Hook, there’s been some nasty words said about the new guy – with the star claiming that Chapman is simply pretending to play the instrument over Hook’s pre-recorded bass riffs.

“I've watched so-called 'New Order' playing in Auckland and Tom Chapman is miming along to my bass on tape of ‘Round & Round,” Hook told NME. “Have a look at it. He's got his fingers on the low and you can hear my high bass in the background. So he's miming. It's the Milli Vanilli of bass.”

He continued: “It's a fantastic compliment, but I best get on to my intellectual property lawyer and see if it's something you're allowed to do. I do think that miming to my bass is pretty much the ultimate insult. Still, check it out, there I am lurking in the background like a ghost.”

As you’d imagine, Chapman and the rest of the band had something to say about Hook’s accusations.

“On the chorus of 'Round & Round' there is a low bass part, a high bass part and Tom sings backing vocals. It's more than one person can manage so Tom recorded his high bass part and it's replayed as part of the backing track sequence. We strongly refute the allegation that New Order are using any of Mr Hook's bass playing in our live performance. When Mr Hook was part of New Order he tracked his parts that couldn't be played live because they coincided with other parts. We are simply doing the same with our new bass player.”

Then, they dropped a real bomb that’ll surely be a slap in the face for Hook – as they brought up the ‘fake DJing’ incident which saw Hook pretending to DJ at Webster Hall a year or two ago.

“People living in glass houses shouldn't throw stones or their recent fake DJing YouTube hit might need to be recalled. Keep watching.”
