Up To 58 Young 'Emo' Teenagers Killed By Officials In Iraq, According To Activitsts

According to the BBC, over 50 young kids and teenagers have been killed in Iraq – simply because they were dressed and acted like emos.

The reports come from human rights activists in the country, who have claimed that right-wing militia are shooting or beating the emos, who were mostly male, to death – because they conservative officials think that they promote devil worshipping and homosexuality.

The killings are said to have come over the last couple of months, following a declaration by Iraq's interior ministry, which condemned the ‘emo’ style, and has lead to the death of up to 58 young individuals.

It’s also been reported that hate leaflets have been handed out in a Shia neighbourhood of Bagdhad with the names of 20 emos who ‘deserved to be punished’, while a Shia Cleric known as Moqtada al-Sadr described them as ‘crazy’ and ‘fools’ in a statement on his website. Al-Sadr is a notoriously powerful figure in that province and his statement read: “They are a plague on Muslim society, and those responsible should eliminate them through legal means.”

One young Iraqi emo told the BBC: “The Iraqi people look at you in a bad way. It is even worse when the Iraqi security for example arrest those in black or in the emo groups.”

This comes after police in Indonesia arrested, shaved, and removed the piercings of 64 young ‘punk rockers’ and emos back in December.
