Legendary Welsh singer Sir Tom Jones has claimed that Simon Cowell, the man behind massive television shows The X-Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, is not fit to judge anybody’s singing talent – as he’s never sung live onstage himself.
Sir Tom, 71, is currently trying his own hand at judging talent on the panel of BBC One show The Voice, which is set in a similar style to The X-Factor. But, the ‘It’s Not Unusual’ singer reportedly refused to sign up to the show – until it was confirmed that the other judges on the show were all established musicians that he saw fit to judge a contest based on singing.
Speaking about some of the other talent-based shows around, Jones said “I watched other talent shows and I thought: Now hang on a minute. How can this person, not mentioning any names, but how can he or she give singers advice if they’ve never gone through it themselves?
“I think you have to have stood up on that stage and gone for auditions, and be able to take the ‘You were great but no, thank you.’ You have to be able to take that. And you have to have experienced that to be able to do it.”
The show is set to air on March 24th and sees Jones judging the singing ability of a number of hopefuls alongside Jessie J, The Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am and The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue.
