Superstar soul singer Adele has overtaken rock legends Pink Floyd in the All Time UK Biggest Selling Album list this week – as her sophomore LP ‘21’ continues its incredible onslaught on chart and sale records across the world.
In a story that will probably shock and sadden some of you older rockers, ‘21’ has now surpassed the sales of Floyd’s seminal ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ album, just a couple of weeks after it was announced the album had also exceeded the sales of the late Michael Jackson’s LP ‘Bad’.
‘21’ has quickly become one of the biggest selling international albums of all-time, and has spent an incredible amount of time on top of both the US and the UK albums charts. It’s sold over 4.14million copies in the UK alone, and now sits at #7 in the top 10 best-selling UK albums of all-time – with just 12,000 more sales needed to take it into the #6 spot, which is occupied by Dire Straits’ ‘Brother in Arms’.
The top spot in the list belongs to Queen’s monster-selling ‘Greatest Hits’ collection album, while 60s icons The Beatles take the #2 spot with ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. Swedish pop group ABBA hold #3 with their 1992 Greatest Hits collection ‘Gold’, just in front of Oasis’ ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’, whilst the King of Pop’s second entry in the list – ‘Thriller’ – sits at #5.
