'The Smiths Shouldn't Reform,' Says Reading And Leeds Festival Chief Melvin Benn

Melvin Benn, organiser of the massive Reading and Leeds Festivals, has told press that he hopes The Smiths don’t reform – because he thinks it’ll ‘destroy their legacy’.

There’s been a lot of speculation and a lot of rumours flying around the net calling for a Smiths revival, with the band’s Johnny Marr recently joking that he’d reform the band – if the UK government was to step down. But Benn, who yesterday said that he’d wouldn’t book Guns N’ Roses unless their original line-up reformed, has said that he thinks that if the band were to get back together, it would ruin their iconic career’s legacy.

“I think if The Smiths reformed it would destroy their legacy personally,” Benn told NME. “I’m sure grown men would cry if it happened but I wouldn’t want to see them reforming.” He went on to talk about his view on a possible future Oasis reunion, saying: “Hopefully there will come a day when Oasis do the same [reunite] but I hope it doesn’t come too soon.”

He continued: “Oasis were just one of those bands where you walked away feeling happy. It was very rare you could go and watch Oasis and not have a great time. Whether we wait until 2015, 2020 or 2040 I don’t know, but it'd be nice if it happened at some point.”
