Tory MP Phil Davies Says BBC Show 'The Voice' Is Simply A 'Very Expensive Advert For Universal'

Phil Davies, a Tory MP for Shipley, West Yorkshire, has claimed that The Voice is nothing more than an advertisement for Universal Records – and an expensive one at that.

According to reports the BBC spent over £20million securing the rights to the show – the winner of which earns themselves a record contract with the massive Universal record label. Whilst the show attracts millions of viewers and is considered the closest rival to ITV's X Factor, Davies seems to think the show is simply 'a very expensive advert' for the company.

Speaking to The Daily Star, the conservative said: “The BBC has paid a fortune for The Voice. This now looks to be a very expensive advert for the record company, which not only gets a heavily-promoted winner but also a boost for its existing artists. The BBC appears to be using this format as a spoiler to sabotage ITV's success with Britain's Got Talent. I don't think this is what the BBC should be doing.”

The BBC quickly replied to the comments, and told Davies that 'two or three' major labels would be represented through-out the program.

They said: “In casting the coaches we spoke to the biggest stars in the music industry regardless of the labels they were attached to. Two of three major labels are represented on the panel and throughout the series other labels will continue to be represented.”
