The Smiths Deny Rumours They Are To Reform

Iconic Manchester quartet The Smiths have denied rumours that they're going to reform for an Autumn tour, after reports emerged this morning that the band were getting back together.

The 80s demi-gods split way back in 1987, and have unsurprisingly been subject to speculation of a reunion a number of times in the past – the band were even offered $5million for a performance at Coachella in 2006, only for Morrissey to turn it down, with the star saying: “No, because money doesn't come into it.” The most recent activity involving a potential reunion, though, came at the start of March – when Johnny Marr joked that he would reunite the band if the UK government was to 'step down'.

But, this morning a site called Music-News.com ran a story which told readers that 'one of the greatest bands the world has ever known are to reform', and claimed that a 'source' had informed them that Morrissey and Marr had been in touch with a 'well-known' promoter, about putting something together. Now though, it seems the reports had been fabricated – with Johnny Marr rubbishing the claims.

Marr posted a message simply telling fans, "The rumour of the Smiths reunion is untrue. It's not happening."

If The Smiths were ever to reform, would you see it as a blessing or a tragedy? Reading and Leeds Festival organiser Melvin Benn has already previously revealed that he hopes that the band don't reform, saying: “I think if The Smiths reformed it would destroy their legacy personally.”
