Rap star Adam Yauch, one third of the iconic hip-hop outfit the Beastie Boys, has lost his battle with cancer.
Yauch, who was just 47, performed as MCA and had been receiving treatment for cancer after a tumour was discovered in his Parotid Gland in 2009.
The Beastie Boys' management posted a statement on the group's official website:
"It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam "MCA" Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer."
The Beastie Boys worked extremely hard to achieve their iconic hip-hop status. The trio were initially dismissed as jokers who notched up a surprise hit with 'Fight for Your Right (To Party)' in 1986. The track, which was lifted from their hugely respected 'License to Ill' debut album, propelled the Beastie Boys to become one of the most influential acts in hip-hop music.
As a result of their worldwide fame, The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April, however, Yauch was unable to attend due to poor health. The treatment he was undergoing also led to the delay of the release of the Beastie Boys' most recent album 'Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2'.
RIP Adam 'MCA' Yauch.
