'America Hasn't Embraced Us Like The UK Has', Say The Scissor Sisters

Glam-rock outfit Scissor Sisters have opened up about the differences between the music scene in the UK and their native US – and why their image and appearance has possibly held them back in the states.

The eccentric group, probably one of the only big bands fronted by both a woman and a man, are a much bigger force over her in Britain than they are in their home country – and they think it has something to do with the difference in the mainstream over here than in America.

Speaking to the The Telegraph, frontwoman Ana Matronic said: “In the UK, you still have the attitude that if it’s good, it will be a hit. In the States, a hit is something that gets played on the radio. You have to dig elsewhere for the good stuff.”

The comments come after the Scissor Sisters were announced for the American stage of the BT River of Music event, which will be held in coordination of the London 2012 Olympics.

Speaking of their addition to the line-up, Matronic said: “It's an amazing demonstration of the way Britain has embraced us. If the Olympics were being held in America, I seriously doubt whether we would be in the running. They would have chosen [country duo] Brooks & Dunn or Nickelback, or somebody like that. But I think we make great ambassadors for American pop. As one of the first American bands with openly gay members, we embody the pioneer spirit. We are manifest destiny in action.”

She went on to talk about the band itself and their passion for 'putting smiles on the faces of people', saying: “We strive to make our time in this band good for ourselves and for others. To be able to do what we do, and put smiles on the faces of people, is a blessing. To make good times for people, keep them going, change their day around, it’s an amazing thing.”

Her bandmate Jake Shears added: “I get a little teary on stage sometimes. It can be really emotional when it dawns on you that people are singing along and having fun.”
