London-based electronic dance duo Pet Shop Boys have revealed that their 2012 Olympic Games track was almost submitted as a Eurovision Song Contest entry, before the pair decided to use it for the massive sporting event earlier this summer.
The award-winning outfit were invited by the BBC to enter a track to represent Great Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest, which we haven’t won since 1997. Considering the offer, the started producing brand new track ‘Winner’ - but it eventually turned into an Olympian track, which the guys were ‘honoured’ to have represent the country.
“[‘Winner’] was slightly with Eurovision in mind," Neil Tennant told The BBC. "The BBC asked us if we were interested, then when the album came out it seemed like the right time to release it. [The closing ceremony] was really exciting, the atmosphere was amazing. Without sounding patriotic, you do feel quite honoured when you're asked to represent [your country].”
The Pet Shop Boys’ eleventh studio album ‘Elysium’ hit #9 in the UK Albums chart on the weekend - stay with Stereoboard to see if any Pet Shop Boy tour dates get announced in the near future.NOTE FROM THE EDITOR We don't run any advertising!
