Psy Becomes First Korean To Top UK Singles Chart With 'Gangnam Style'

K-pop superstar Psy became the first ever Korean to top the UK Singles chart this weekend, after this world-beating track ‘Gangnam Style’ - officially the most ‘liked’ video on YouTube - hit #1 in over 30 countries.

Korean rapper/singer Psy, real name Park Jae-Sang, burst onto the scene earlier in 2012 when his video for ‘Gangnam Style’ (which you can see below) became an overnight sensation, leading to an incredible number of copycat videos and tributes. Psy has set his sights on global domination, and with a UK #1 a #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (as well as #1’s all over the world) he has now completed his mission of taking over the world.

Psy looks set to be the first K-Pop artist to fully transfer from South Korea to a Global audience. K-Pop as a genre is now going through a period of mass globalisation and Psy’s success has become an integral part of this process.

Gangnam Style has been backed by a huge amount of stars - James Corden, Tom Cruise, and Katy Perry have all tweeted their love for it, while Britney Spears was taught the dance live on the Ellen Show. Even Robbie Williams took to his website to profess his love for the hilarious and catchy track.

Thanking fans for his support after hitting the top spot, Psy said: “Thanks to all the UK fans out there for supporting me and Gangnam Style.” Psy has now signed a management deal with Justin Beiber’s boss Scooter Braun, and ‘Gangnam Style’ was released through School Boy Records/Universal.
