'Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead' Set For #1 Following Death Of Margaret Thatcher?

Following the death of the Iron Lady herself Margaret Thatcher yesterday, a number of classic tracks have shot up the UK Singles chart - including three different versions of ‘Ding Dong the Witch is Dead’!

In fact, sales of the Judy Garland track have skyrocketed so much that The Daily Mirror is predicting that the single will hit #1 - something which is being helped greatly by a Facebook campaign hoping the track tops the chart.

It’s been reported that the track is at #54 in the charts as of this morning, while it’s already reached #26 in the iTunes chart. Two other versions of the song - one by Ella Fitzgerald, and one by The Munchkins - sit at #146 #183 respectively.

‘Tramp the Dirt Down’, Elvis Costello’s anti-Thatcher track from the late Eighties, has also seen a huge increase in sales, hitting #128 in the Tuesday midweek sales. MP George Galloway caused controversy with a tweet referring to the track hours after the news of Thatcher’s death.

He wrote:

You’ll have to wait until the official chart countdown to find out whether it’s reached #1 this week. Do you support the cause, or do you find it a little distasteful? Let us know your opinion in the comment box below.
